wireless internet service

I am sure there many people is disappoint with the wireless internet access (CDMA 1x, 3G, EVDO) provided by many telecommunication operators. At the first time, they can surf very fast but few months later it will very slow
Many factors influence the speed of wireless internet access. It could be hardware modem issue, BTS occupancy, distance from BTS to BSC, bandwidth to internet etc. But as a customer we do not want to know about it all. We just need the service as telecommunication promise in the promotion after we paid
Usually, telecommunication operators are getting occupancy issue either BTS or internet bandwidth but mostly it is because Radio Frequency (RF) capacity. Telecommunication operators promote to have more and more customers but in many cases, the network is saturated. What happening in this case is, customer session is still there but has poor quality since many request from customers but limit bandwidth capacity. So then the session is still going on but the speed is very slow or no response from the website
I used to use Wimode modem from Bakrie telecom to access to internet and as any other telecommunication operators, sometime the speed is good but during the peak hour sometimes getting slow. Sometimes when I read a page from websites for a few minutes suddenly I can browse to the next page or I can not to access to another website. Then I have to wait for few minutes to be able to access to the next page or new website. What happen once we read the page from the website we love is our connection was terminated by the network due to our session is in dormant mode. Dormant mode is idle session once no traffic is downloaded from us. What happen in the next once we need to browse to new website or the next page is, we have to make new session again. We have to request a channel from BTS and so on
To keep the session we already made from our modem, BTS until bandwidth internet once we read a page we love for a few minute, I used to do ping session to particular website or address. This is to ensure that we always occupy a channel. Another thing, by pinging to particular website or address we will notice how fast the connection we have and prepare once the connection will be dropped
To do pinging session you can follow the steps below;
1. Click start
2. Click run
3. Click cmd then windows prompt will appear
4. type a website you want to test or address for example www.yahoo.com -t
You can identify your connection by seeing the response that appears there. The best response time is less than 1 ms (direct connection to the system or located in the same network). For CDMA 1x system, response time around 500 ms to 1500 ms is still acceptable. We can say the connection is good. But for 3G system it should be less than that. It is depending on website you want to test. And if the response time is more than that range, please prepare as in few second the session will be no response. The page you are seeing will lank.

Jakarta - Concerned with the explosion of the Lingkar Mega Kuningan, making a number of company off today. However, it does not mean the employee can relax holiday, they are asked to keep working in remote alias from home.

One of the companies that implement such policies is a Hewlett-Packard (HP) India. HP own headquarters location in Menara Danamon, that very close distance to the location of the bomb at Ritz Carlton Hotel and JW Marriot.

Adrian Lesmono as Market Development Manager HP India said, as a result of the explosion is that many HP employees can not go to the area office. For access to the area have closed the obligation.

"Access road to our office is closed, and I get Call to guard in the vicinity of the location so that employees dihimbau to remote-work," he explained to detikINET, Friday (17/7/2009).

How do you charge your customers?

The more variety of products was offered, the more benefits will get. Based on this statement, many services are available right now in the Indonesia mobile telecommunication market. It has been more than two years since some new mobile telecommunications with CDMA or 3G platforms were offering many services to get significant total number of customers. They compete to get a credit from customers and their product will become customer’s choice. Many kind of strategic and product was created in order to get more benefit. One bye one and day by day, new product and strategic are coming and going, they are selected by market. In the beginning, low cost is a main consideration for customers to choose the product for their needs. But right now the quality is first priority since almost all operators; about 10 GSM and CDMA operators are offering the same, low cost to make a call to the same operators.
Varieties of the charging mechanism are happening in the many services including download content that can be change anytime depend on the market request or the same services offered by competitors
There many kinds of charging mechanism in the download contents services. Based on the type of contents they can be divided into:

1.Periodic charging per certain duration time ( daily, weekly, monthly and so on)
In this charging, customer have to pay of a mount of money after the application to be a receiver a content has been approved by provider (operator). Once it is approved they will charged a one then receiving content for few days. After those days are passed, operator will offer the same content for next few days and then recharged the same price. Customers can stop be a receiver of content by submit a un-registration form to cancel to receiving more same content. If customers forgot to submit this request at the time when first period finished then it is supposed customers agree to extend a application then customer will be charged and will receive the same content for one next period

2.Based on price per content
In this charging mechanism, customers do not need to submit an application to receive content. A charging will be given once they try to download a content they want. A price is given based on a type of content, different type and size have different price. It is possible to have different price to each contents. Customers are permitted to look at to the contents available before they decide to buy them. Once they interested to buy one or more contents, the charging are occurring when customers push the download bottom. Contents are received by downloading process.

Here is the sample of both charging mechanism in the CDMA network that have been introduced to the market:

1.ESIA HIDAYAH, ESIA KASIH, ESIA FU
By submit to all above services provided by those bundling handsets, customers will receive content periodically for a certain period time (example; one payment for a week). Submission can done by push a menu that available in the handset and follow the next step. It is a simple steps and procedure to register this content service. Once customers decide to stop to receive this content, customers just need to submit un-register form that available in the menu as well. Periodic content can be accessed by customers by push a content menu that is available in the handsets once registration form is succeeded. Customers can browse the content anytime and as much they want during this submission period deducted each time the customers submit a subscription form to receive this content
Charging will happen once the submission accepted by provider and customers have enough balance

2.ESIA SHOP
It is different with the previous services, ESIA SHOP provide a download content that can be accessed through the same handsets. Both ESIA SHOP and periodic content service are available in the same handset and the menus to do both are already available inside the handset. A one stop service has been prepared inside these handsets. By pushing a download menu, customers can see much kind of contents offered by provider and can by one or more those by push download bottom in the each content. Price and simple description are given in the each content before customers decide to buy it. Once customers push this bottom, charging are happening and downloading process as well. If customers have low balance, they will receive this notification and download process will fail. And if balance is enough for one content, download process will continue until the content receive by customers in their handsets.

Both charging mechanisms are used to use by content provider or operators to charge the customers during receiving their download content services. Both mechanisms has been applied by PT Bakrie Telecom in many their value added services products based on BREW application they have. Their products are ESIA HIDAYAH, ESIA KASIH, ESIA FU, ESIA SHOP.

Giving Attractive tariff to VOIP International Call services

“Battle of tariff” is still happening in Indonesian telecommunication business right now. One telecommunication operators will decide to make cheaper tariff suddenly once their competitor change the tariff cheaper. And the same strategic will be followed by all competitors. This competition is including in the international tariff call service. A telecommunication operator which has fully international network infrastructure will play a key role during giving an International Call Service. Such a telecommunication operator has a additional benefit since they did not need to lease an international link connection as a condition to guarantee the quality of link. Usually telecommunication operators will need to lease international link connection to guarantee the quality of services otherwise they need to route the VOIP international traffic through internet link. It is acceptable as long as still having the good quality of voice.
Although telecommunication operator have no international link connection in their current network but they still have a change to offer attractive International Call Service tariff to their customers. How this is happening? It can be done by providing multi International VOIP partners. This strategic definitely for them which route the International Call Service through internet link to reduce cost once we used dedicated international link connection. By having multi partners, telecommunication operators will able to charge variety of tariff depending on destination country
For example, a telecommunication operator has two international VOIP partners. Then a telecommunication will split the international call service traffic based on destination countries. An A partner responsible to carry out the traffic to Taiwan, Singapore, China, Japan, India, USA, Kuwait, South Africa and Korea meanwhile a B partner responsible to all countries except those countries in A partner. The splitting of the tariff and assigning which partner will carry out the traffic is based on the price for each destination countries at both partners. In this sample, A partner is having cheaper tariff than B partner.
The next step is assigning which countries should be handled by both partners. Assigning the countries is based on the top ten destination countries used to be called by the customers. Once we have the top ten destination countries the next step is splitting the traffic by configuring a policy in the VOIP system for both partners.
For example
1. A partner will be reached once there is a coming call with prefix 3456# and B partner and
2. B partner will be reached once there is a coming call with prefix 7890#
By both policy, any call coming which match with both policy, the traffic will be forwarded to proper destination country through assigned partners
What about customers end? Do they need to have different method to reach destination countries to have cheap tariff? The answer is nothing they need to do to have cheap tariff. They will call as usually they called. The splitting traffic and assigning destination countries all done by VOIP system
In this strategic, telecommunication have to smart to choose which partner have cheap tariff call and acceptability in the quality of voice. The quality of voice is very important and the key point to offer cheap tariff during offering International Call service. it is reasonable since usually telecommunication operators are using internet link connection to route the voice traffic. To ensure the quality of voice, telecommunication operators have to ensure the quality of link from the source address (telecommunication operators itself) until gateway’s partners and the destination address
By having multi International VOIP partners, telecommunication operators will have flexibility to offer cheap VOIP International Call service. In other words, telecommunication operators are possible to have more than two International VOIP partners. More International VOIP partners, more attractive tariff can be offered by telecommunication operators to their VOIP International Call service

Telkomsel launched Hosted Push Mail Exchange

Internet Access Through CDMA 1x

Even CDMA 1xRtt service is offering low speed, about 153 Kbps for downlink bandwidth, compare to 3G service, about 2.7 Mbps for downlink bandwidth, but this market can be underestimated and then leave the customers to get this services. The reason is there some obstacle to produced massive 3G handsets due to high cost for the Indonesian market. Moreover, it will need high investment to deploy 3G network massively due to there are so many new equipment should be installed in the GSM network to get wide area services. In addition, the minimum educational to customers that should be done by telecommunication operators which provide this service was made a common mistake that the 3G service is equal only to the video conference. As the result, 3G services are growing to slow compare to the investment should be prepared by operators to have this service.

Internet service by optimizing network existing is the alternative choice to meet customers requirement regarding the internet services. As mention previously, commonly, existing network infrastructures was deployed in Indonesia are focused to voice services which are based on GSM and CDMA network. This existing network actually useful for internet market to meet customers’ requirement due to right now internet service is costly and have small market in the personal or SOHO class. Cost of internet bandwidth is the main problem in Indonesia, internet lease line that should be provided by internet provider is very expensive. Generally, GSM operators focused to build voice market and internet services through the GPRS networks are as additional service. 3. AAA is processing authentication, authorization and accounting. Billing processes are occurring here. For some comprehensive network, they provide separate billing system instead of AAA
4. Others complementary devices such as, router, catalyst, proxy server are additional devices to process the routing to the network, proxy server etc

WIMODE and WIFONE
The products that have been produced massively by PT Bakrie Telecom to the market are WIMODE and WIFONE. WIMODE is modem devices to access internet services in the 1xRtt network. It means the customer should attach the modems to PC or laptop to make PPP session then connect to internet service. Meanwhile WIFONE is terminal that has a modem feature so user can connect to the PC or Laptop to access internet service. Both products are the pioneer of internet service that has been produces massively to the market. More than a hundred thousand both product has been in the market and received well response from customers
It is a challenge for telecommunication operators to provide internet service through their networks. And the important thing is providing internet service with low cost for Indonesian market.

Offerring variety of services to customers

Many services can be offered to the customers in the CDMA 2000 1x networks. Most of them are optimizing network existing with some additional devices in the application layer to handle those services. Sometimes by optimizing network existing, this service will disrupt others services has been established. Lack of RF capacity is a common issue once internet service through CDMA 2000 1x introduced to subscribers. It is because mostly mobile telecommunication operators have limited band frequency (license issue)
There some new services can be deploy in the CDMA 1xRtt network, they are:

1.CDMA 1xRtt service

This is internet service using same RF channel in the BTS. Subscribers will allow to access internet service by making Point to Point (PPP) session from the subscriber device to close BTS then to BSC. This BSC will connect to PDSN that will provide internet connection to subscribers
Some of these products have been introduced to the market by PT Bakrie Telecom as one of CDMA operator in Indonesia. Commonly, CDMA operator is not focusing in this service due to many reasons. PT Bakrie Telecom has provided the dedicated products to serve this service. Some of them are;

1.Wifone
This is terminals that support a modem device to attach to PC or laptop though serial interface to make PPP calls then connect to internet. Calling and SMS function are available as a main feature in this terminal

2.Wimode
This is are modem device to make PPP session call by attaching directly to the PC or Laptop then access to internet

2.WAP service
WAP is the protocol to provide internet service or value added service such a download contain through the high end handset that support java application. Subscriber can access both services directly through the handset without any additional device. This is client server platform. Handsets are the client meanwhile server should be provided by operators in their network as a proxy gateway to access to internet or to others application service such a download contain

3.Value added services
This is service based on additional technology embedded to the handsets to get some service such a download contain. One of application technology to provide this service is BREW platform. This technology have been embedded to get value added service such a download containt
There are some these products have been in the market such a ESIA HIDAYAH, ESIA KASIH, ESIA SLANK and ESIA FU. They all was offered by PT Bakrie Telecom with many feature are available in these handsets

Increasing customers growth by offering bundling handsets

Many telecommunications operators in Indonesia that was built later will face same problem to introduce their product to customers and get their good response. The thing that it is make sense is right now there so many operators here for mobile and fixed license, they are around tens operators. In addition, their customers are located at some big city like Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya and Medan. .
This is why new operator should have another strategic so they can sale their services and get response from customers. Moreover by this new strategic they will get loyal customers even there will come new offing from their competitor
Traditional strategic and it has been implemented by some operators that was built former that is developing strong networks in every single sides. These operators continuously increase their infrastructure network at new areas that there no telecommunication service are available and continuously to optimize them. The more coverage they have, the more customers they will get. These methods are very costly and the same strategic can not be adopted by new operators. It is need more than 5 years to get what we called Break Even Point (BEP) and new operators can not do it. New operators have to consider some alternatives instead of developing massive infrastructures network. Formerly, (around 1996-1997) there are only 2-3 mobiles and one fixed operators, it can be accepted to investment high budget to develop networks infrastructure and will get benefit after for 5 years. In addition, mobile telecommunications is new technology at that time and will get positive response from customers
But the same strategic can not be implemented to the new operators since right now tariff is so cheap compared to the previous. Commonly, all operators compete to get as many as customer by offering low tariff for voice and SMS
Alternative methods have been introduced by new operator and widely promotion is become first priority to these operators.

What is the new strategic?
Offering bundling handset is a new trend used by new operator to offering their services. And obviously this is low price handset with minimum features available inside, but this is enough for basic telecommunications needed by customers, e.g. making voice call and messaging, monotone ring tone and color body for attractive performances. In this strategic, operators work together with handset vendor then bundled the handsets to have only work with specific requirement. In other words, handset will have no functions we put another number (DN) inside it. The specific requirements can be:
1. have only specific band frequency
2. Authenticate with specific
Both of requirements are inserting during fabrication process to the handsets

Many kind of banding handsets has been introduced by new and old operators due to this method is effective and proved have good response from customers. PT Bakrie Telecom as a new fixed wireless operator with its brand market ESIA has offered many kind of this product since 1 year ago. Even ESIA is not the pioneer for this strategic but it seems market response very well.

There are some reasons why it is occurring:

1. It is fixed wireless handset which has low tariff and
2. New introduction for fixed wireless license
3. Handsets have low price
4. Attractive services offered, e.g. free call and SMS to same operator numbers

In this market strategic, operators are not following previous campaign as introduced by old operator that is the more coverage the more customers. Now they believe that the more innovative the more benefits. This is reasonable since mobile and fixed wireless customers are spreading at some big cities. Winning the competition can be done by many ideas instead of adding more coverage, and the banding handsets are the brilliant idea to win this competition. Operators can save much money by this methods and can be allocated to create more brilliant idea instead of network infrastructures development

Value add services: downloading content service

It is necessary to explore what customers need before mobile telecommunication operators deploy a product and launch it to the market. The survey to identify customers need is mandatory for them to have a guarantee that a product they will launch it is the product they are waiting for. The actions after launched a product is still necessary as well to maintain the customers. Since the telecommunication industry is always update, pre and post action is always needed.

The attractive product that has become a habit for customer to keep always updating lately is download content service. This is a service where interactive communications are occurring between customers as buyer or permanent customers and telecommunication operators as the content providers. Providers offer various contents with specific price for each content or customers need to submit a registration to get some contents periodically depend on both customers and providers agreement. The contents could be ring tone, wall paper, true tone, games and streaming video

How to get the contents?
In Indonesia, downloading contents services has been introduced first time by GSM operator with their GPRS services. Telecommunication mobile operators used to have third party to provide all those contents; in other words, operators did not create by their selves the contents.
There are many mechanism can be done buy customers to receive contents provide by providers. Previously and right now still happening is customers should subscribe via SMS to subscript a routine content that will be delivered after getting confirmation from provider to specific short code number. Based on this subscription, the next step, customers must connect to the GPRS network to download desired contents.

This mechanism has some weaknesses:

1. Customers handsets should have java application, WAP protocol (high end handset)

2. In some case customers failed to download a contents due to some reason meanwhile charging is occurring

3. Due to manually configuration in the customers’ handsets, mostly they are getting a problem during this process

4. Many cases, the transparency flowchart of the program is not clear enough and understood well by customers

Due to some weaknesses above, many programs of this mechanism are short term customers. Customers subscripted for a reason then they will un-subscript once they receive what they want. And the result, providers have to update their program and promote it every time. More cost are needed to maintain this kind of customers

To overcome those weaknesses, another mechanism has been created to offer same services but more simple and low cost for both provider and customers but the quality of services is acceptable. The new mechanism is by optimizing BREW application that embedded to the handsets – obviously these are low end handsets that can be reached by low and middle class of customers.

In these mechanisms:

1. Customers no need to do some activities as done by first mechanism, e.g. configure the handsets, registering the application program via SMS, etc

2. They have one stop services through the handsets due to all the things to get a content are available there, the only thing that should be done by customers I pushing a bottom and redirect it to their request

3. Undesired failure before downloading content due to unclear program can be eliminated in the first time.

By BREW application, handset capable to identify download contents services as Java application in the high end handsets. Unfortunately, BREW is proprietary of QUALCOM then this will work to only CDMA platform. This mechanism is definitely helping provider and customers due to some simplicity offered, and the important thing is low end handset but high capability available inside the handsets is accepted by low and middle customers

Generally there two kinds of application services can be offered by mobile telecommunication based on BREW application embedded inside the handsets, they are:

1. Subscription program and

2. Downloading contents (ring tone, wall paper, games)

In the first one, customers need to submit a registration to get information, horoscope, advices, etc. It is depending on customers submitted in the request form. After agreement from provider, customer will receive all above program

The second one is providing contents with certainty price for content was offered. Customer can chose and decide which content they need with the clear process and transparency program. Both applications are happening right now in the Indonesian mobile telecommunication business. Both are being offering by PT Bakrie Telecom as a CDMA fixed wireless license operator. The products they are offered in this packet have a significant response from customers

They are new products offered by PT Bakrie telecom. These are bundling handsets supported BREW application to provide subscription program and download content ESIA HIDAYAH pointed to Moslem customers, ESIA KASIH for Christian and ESIA FU for Chinese customers
Inside all of handsets above are available subscription program service that related to the each customers intended. In the ESIA HIDAYAH is available Quran reading and Azan time, ESIA KASIH, holy bible and ESIA FU, Chinese information and their faith.
